BURNETT AND POLK COUNTIES – The filing period for the April first school board elections closed on Tuesday, January 7th. There will be contests for the Frederic, Unity, Spooner, Clear Lake, and Turtle Lake boards. Voters in the Osceola, Grantsburg, and Siren districts will decide which candidate gets to serve a short term. And in seven school districts there will be no contest, with all candidates running unopposed.
Matt Ennis is running against incumbent Chuck Holicky in Frederic for the single open seat. At Unity, long term board member Debra Ince-Peterson and newly appointed Ryan Peterson will face Jerry Larsen on the ballot for two open seats. The Clear Lakeelection has Peter Wieczorek facing incumbents Greg Friendshuh and Brent Anderson for the two open seats.
Two members of the Spooner school board, Philip Markgren and Bev Bohac, are retiring. There are four candidates for the three open seats, incumbent Paul Goellner plus Ed Morgan, Cathy Maas, and Randy McQuade.
In the Turtle Lake school district, there are two incumbents and two challengers on the ballot for two seats. The candidates are present members Ruth Morton and Renee Lutz plus Tadd Peterson and Shad Torgerson.
Short term elections occur when a board member is appointed to fill a vacancy. The appointed member serve until the next election, at which voters decide who will fill the remaining years of the term. In cases like this, all candidates are listed together and the winning candidate who finishes lowest gets the short term.
There are short term contests this year in Grantsburg, Siren, and Osceola. In each district, there are three candidates for three open positions and the third place vote getters will serve the remainder of the short term.
The Grantsburg candidates are incumbents David Ahlquist, Cindy Jensen, and Jason Burkman who was appointed to replace Patti Bonneville. The short term is until the 2015 election.
The Siren school board has an open seat and a short term. The candidates are incumbents Jeff Howe and Peggy Moore plus Mark Pettis. Moore was appointed to replace Cate Hayman last spring after Hayman was elected to fill a vacant spot. Incumbent Jake Mangelsen is not running for another term, creating the open seat. The candidate finishing third will serve one year.
Osceola has three incumbents on the ballot, Craig Brunclik, Roseanne Anderson, and Keri Uzpen, who was appointed in June to replace Louis Garriga. Again, the short term is for one year, until the April 2015 election.
There are no contested school board elections the Webster, Luck, St. Croix Falls, Amery, Clayton, Shell Lake, and Cumberlanddistricts.
