Setting the record straight
I’m the President of Operation Prosperity and would like to set the record straight! Let’s start at the beginning – to answer one reader’s comment – it was somewhat less than 10 people who got together over coffee to talk about what we, as local citizens, could do in support of candidates for the new Polk County Board of Supervisors.
We established our goals, determined the best approach for reaching those goals and moved forward. So yes OPI is a NEW grassroots movement with a focus on creating a business-friendly, pro-taxpayer, pro-job environment in Polk County.
Our first step was to create a legally established independent expenditure committee. Our next step was to get the word out about our organization and start raising the funds needed to move forward. We hosted ONE fund-raiser – the rest is history – as word spread, many citizens & small business owners stepped forward to support our efforts both financially and by volunteering their time.
As you can see from our official Government Accountability Board (GAB) reports filed with the Polk County Clerk we are 100% funded by locals! All the crazy accusations about the Koch brothers & Americans for Prosperity are just that – unfounded and UNTRUE! I suggest to those who choose to make wild accusations to do their homework first!
It actually made me smile when I read the remarks about our “glitzy” website and “slick” Facebook page – which were developed for us by a local company we hired. We tried as much as possible to use local companies and talent to produce our literature, signs, etc. Given our limited budget and time constraints, that wasn’t always possible but we did our best. We have great resources here in Polk County!
One current County supervisor went so far as to “name names” – the person she said started OPI I’d never met until he picked up some yard signs. Hard to start an organization when you’ve never met the president of that organization! More crazy accusations!
The out-going Chairman of the Polk County Democrat Party, Jeff Peterson, at a County Board Meeting accused OPI of “hijacking” the board of supervisors. He also accused OPI of not wanting clean and protected lakes – really Jeff – several members of OPI live on Polk County lakes or rivers – do you think we want to devalue our own property by reducing lake quality? I get the sense from Jeff’s rant at the last board meeting that he’s feeling a bit over-whelmed by what we’ve been able to accomplish as a grassroots organization! I also don’t believe that was the appropriate place to vent his frustrations!
In a recent letter I’d written I stated that Polk County owns a number of businesses including a mine, a recycling center, and a nursing home. That’s all I said – I didn’t advocate keeping, changing, or selling them! The “fear mongers” grabbed that statement and again made unfounded accusations about OPI supporting the sale of county businesses. We believe in supporting candidates who have the business experience and judgment to run this complex organization as effectively and efficiently as possible. We simply wanted to make sure voters understood that the County is a big, complicated organization.
Several people have mentioned the fact that OPI hasn’t interviewed or spoken to any of the candidates – which means we’ve followed the legal requirement of not coordinating expenditures with candidates. All of the candidates or their opponents have public records and some we know personally. It’s not that hard in a small community to determine which candidates are pro-jobs, pro-prosperity, and pro-taxpayer.
And yes, we are aware that some candidates are Republicans and some are not, and some we have no idea as to their political choice. We support candidates based on their or their opponents voting record and don’t care whether they are Democrat or Republican or other.
We did our best to select and support candidates we feel will move Polk County forward! Please visit our website: www.OperationProsperity.com and vote on April 1st.
