Centuria man loses life in Hwy. 35 crash; services Thursday
POLK COUNTY - A 63-year-old Centuria man lost his life in a two-vehicle collision on Friday afternoon, Nov. 8 at the intersection of Hwy. 35 and 140th Avenue.
According to a news release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Department, Lane H. Burke was taken by ambulance to the St. Croix Regional Medical Center in St. Croix Falls, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
A police report states that Lane was driving his 2012 Ford Escape east on 140th and as he entered onto Hwy. 35, a southbound Ford F-350 pickup truck operated by Cody J. Gilbertson, 28, Dresser, also entered the intersection and the vehicles collided. Witnesses said the Burke vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign on 140th.
Authorities were notified of the accident at 2:12 p.m.
The pickup sustained heavy front end damage and the Escape sustained substantial driver’s side door damage.
Gilbertson sustained possible leg injuries but did not seek immediate medical assistance.
According to an obituary on kolstadfamilyfuneralhome.com, Lane was a "loving, generous, talented, energetic, active, inquisitive, organized, positive man who was very engaged in the world, and in his community - he was on the board of the Polk County Museum and active in the Loveless Lake Association. He was so very proud of his daughters, and delighted in their successes."
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, November 14 at 3:00 P.M. at Unity Church Unitarian, 733 Portland Avenue, St. Paul, Minnesota 55104. The family will greet visitors at the church prior to the Memorial Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Minnesota Public Radio and Wilderness Inquiry.
Assisting the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at the scene were the Centuria Fire Department, St Croix Falls Fire Department, St. Croix Valley EMS, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
